Participants don’t have to be “addicts” or “sick” to receive support, and don’t have to be professionally certified in order to give back safely and benefit from the experience of community and supporting someone else in need. Participants can volunteer one day and reach out with a need the next. This balance of giving and receiving actually begins to eliminate the idea of “volunteerism” and infuse communities with the type of mutual support and non-hierarchical belonging that is optimal for brain health and proven to be supportive for healing trauma.
