Using basic Voice API and SMS technology on a local area code, the system connects peers, neighbors, and trained community members to callers who need human connection. Listeners are trained to provide referrals to local harm reduction and recovery resources (through partnerships with local syringe access programs as well as Atlas by Shatterproof ((link to https://www.treatmentatlas.org/). The phone line is also supported by a local cohort of trained facilitators who listeners can bring on via 3-way calling to navigate emergency situations.
This service has been found to ease the burden on true crisis line resources in regional locales, allowing both callers and trained volunteers to engage in extended-duration phonecalls and meaningful experiences of human connection via phone or SMS.
The Listening Line provides non-crisis emotional support between community members.
