Who We Are
SeekHealing is a nonprofit organization that utilizes awareness and connection practices to combat the loneliness epidemic in the US.
Founded in 2018 — follow along on the journey.
Our story
Told with the hard years left in. We publish our financials every year for the same reason.
SeekHealing began when the founder’s close friend survived an opioid overdose and the two of them started a healing journey together. What they found was that meaningful social connection and community belonging are the most important elements of addiction recovery — yet are almost impossible to find after addiction treatment.
Traditional recovery models often perpetuate experiences of shame, and can feature social structures that are unwelcoming and hierarchical.
So the founders worked with neuroscientist Dr. Rachel Wurzman, trauma expert Dr. Gabor Maté and other specialists to build a different approach to the systemic issues underneath addiction and loneliness: social health.
Eight seekers came to the first retreat. By the end of the first year there were 150 members.
Launched in the first weeks of the pandemic, it has since grown to serve thousands of people seeking connection and healing — most of them nowhere near Western North Carolina.
Opened in Haywood County through partnerships with VAYA Health and the Evergreen Foundation.
The economic downturn brought a cash flow crisis, and we unfortunately had to lay off 50% of our staff — seven people. We still held over 1,100 events that year, though for nearly six months everything was completely volunteer operated.
We leave this on the page on purpose. The communities kept meeting because the communities are the organization.
We stabilized staffing models and revenue streams to create sustainability, and saw attendance and impact grow in all three communities.
We shifted to a shared Executive Triad leadership model and expanded our impact across eight priority communities. After Hurricane Helene, SeekHealing became a trusted source of trauma-informed support in Western North Carolina.
Our story
We facilitate meaningful human connection to address loneliness, strengthen social health, cultivate compassion, and equip people with the power to give and receive authentic support.
And through that work, to improve the effectiveness of mental health treatment systems and reduce deaths of despair.
Our vision
We envision a world where everyone belongs, where resilient and compassionate communities thrive at a slower pace — a world people no longer wish to escape, but live in together.
